Fabien Burki
Associate Professor, SciLifeLab Fellow I established my research group at Uppsala University in 2016, in the Systematic Biology program (Dept. Organismal Biology). Prior to my move to Sweden, I was a PhD student at the University of Geneva (Switzerland) between 2004-2009 and a postdoc fellow at the University of British Columbia (Canada) between 2009-2016. My research focuses on the study of unicellular eukaryotes (aka the protists), in order to understand the great diversity of life. I am fascinated by how much discovery potential of non-textbook biology lies among protists. I am especially interested in the origin of plastids, as the acquisition of these organelles by protists transformed life on Earth but in spite of this importance we still know relatively little how this happened. I am also a dad, passionate (obsessed?) of street photography (check out some of my photos on Instagram), taiko player, and speciality coffee lover. |
